Can you believe the five year anniversary of the war in Iraq is coming up already in March? On the bright side, resistance to the war is only growing, and Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW), the folks who brought you the SF shutdown 5 years ago, are back with plans for March 15 and 19.
March 15 at the Chevron Refinery in Richmond:
The refinery currently processes 1.1 million barrels of
Iraqi oil monthly, poisoning the local ground and water while contributing to
climate change and profiting from the war in Iraq. DASW will be joining together
with local groups that have been working to prevent the refinery’s proposed
expansion to organize a demonstration on Saturday, March 15. Come take part in
art, theater, direct action, cycling, and satire to make a strong statement to
Chevron, the government, the media and the world that Americans do not support
war, dependence on oil, or environmental destruction.
March 19: As long as there are people dying, there can’t be
business as usual. DASW takes to the street in downtown SF on the day the war
began five years ago.
DASW sees these not simply as one-day isolated actions, but
as part of a larger strategy to weaken the pillars that support war and
injustice. Counter recruitment, GI resistance, media work, mass demonstrations,
and direct action are just a few of the pieces of the ongoing anti-war
movement. We cannot expect our elected officials to do it: The people must take
the lead, working together to build bridges and work toward our common goals of
peace and justice.
I hope to see you all on March 15 and 19; I booked my
return flight so I could be there! They’ll be fun and inspiring days, and a
chance to learn more about how you can become involved in ongoing anti-war
work.
